In yet another shocking case of violence against the Hindu minority in Bangladesh, a prominent Hindu leader, Bhabesh Chandra Roy (58), was brutally murdered after being abducted from his home on Thursday, 17th April.
The incident took place in Biral Upazila of Dinajpur district. Roy, who served as the Vice-President of the Bangladesh Puja Udjapan Parishad (Biral unit), was reportedly targeted in a planned attack that reflects the growing insecurity among minorities in the country.
According to reports, Roy received a phone call around 4:30 pm while he was at home. Within half an hour, four men stormed his residence and forcibly took him away on motorcycles. The assailants transported him to Narabari village, where he was subjected to horrific torture.
The attackers later dumped his unconscious body at his home in a van. His family rushed him to a local health facility before he was transferred to Dinajpur Medical College Hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival.
Roy’s wife has identified two of the abductors, and police have initiated an investigation. However, the brutal nature of the attack and the fact that he was a vocal Hindu community leader raise serious questions about the safety of minorities in Bangladesh.
This incident adds to the growing list of targeted violence against Hindus in the country, further highlighting the vulnerability of religious minorities amidst rising intolerance and impunity.
