KEY POINTS
- 26 killed in Pahalgam terror attack, Pakistan link suspected.
- Some Kashmiris defend Pakistan, deny its role in violence.
- Ground statements reveal rising radical mindset post-attack.
On April 22, 2025, India faced yet horrific tragedy in Kashmir. A terror attack in Pahalgam claimed the lives of 26 innocent people, including tourists, locals, and security personnel. Blood was shed, families were broken, and once again, the question arose, when will this end?
But what was even more shocking than the terror itself was the reaction of some local Kashmiris. Instead of standing with the victims and against terrorism, several voices were heard justifying or defending Pakistan, a country widely known for supporting and sending terrorists into Indian territory.
When asked if Pakistan was involved in the attack, one Kashmiri man replied, “This is a political issue, I’m sorry.” This isn’t just a neutral statement, it reflects a mindset that refuses to hold the enemy accountable. It shows how some people, even after years of bloodshed and pain, still choose silence over truth.

Another Kashmiri boldly stated, “You Indians have only one problem, that you keep bringing Pakistan into the picture again and again.” These words not only downplay Pakistan’s role in terrorism but also insult the memory of the 26 people who lost their lives.

In a shocking statement, one man said, “We don’t want development, tourism, or jobs. You people target our prayers, hijab, and azaan.” At a time when India is building roads, schools, and hospitals in Kashmir, such words are heartbreaking. How can one ignore the benefits of peace and development and instead focus only on religious identity?

Another man went further, saying, “Why should innocent people suffer for this?” in reaction to India suspending the Indus Waters Treaty with Pakistan. But what about the innocent people who died in the Pahalgam attack? Why does their suffering not matter to him?
A Kashmiri woman openly said, “Pakistan is our Muslim kin… they are our brothers.” While India is giving them education, safety, employment, and dignity, they still look towards a nation that has only sent guns and blood across the border. This is not brotherhood, it’s blind loyalty to a country that has only spread terror.
Another individual went as far as saying, “Why should we discuss Pakistan? We will discuss our brothers.” This refusal to even talk about Pakistan’s role shows how deep the radicalisation has gone in some minds. It’s not about truth anymore, it’s about denial.
Terrorism has no religion. It doesn’t see if a victim is Hindu, Muslim, Sikh, or Christian. Yet, even after a clear terror attack, some Kashmiris try to justify or cover up Pakistan’s role. One man claimed, “No one targeted Hindus. It was random firing.” But what about the security footage, the eyewitnesses, and the repeated targeting of certain groups in past attacks?
True Kashmiriyat means peace, hospitality, and unity. It does not mean supporting those who kill innocent people. Kashmiris must understand that Pakistan has not given them peace, prosperity, or pride. It has only sent terrorism, hatred, and division.
