Akshaya Tritiya, one of the most sacred and prosperous days in the Hindu calendar, was celebrated across India today with devotion, joy, and traditional fervour. Falling during the bright half of the lunar month of Vaisakha, this day is believed to bring unending prosperity, success, and good fortune. The word ‘Akshaya’ means ‘never diminishing’, and it is believed that any good deed or investment made on this day brings lasting benefits.
Why Akshaya Tritiya Is Special
Akshaya Tritiya holds deep roots in Hindu mythology. It is believed that the Treta Yuga began on this day, which is the second of the four Yugas. It also marks the birth anniversary of Lord Parashurama, the sixth incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Many people also remember the story of the River Ganga’s descent to Earth, which is associated with this auspicious occasion.
This day also carries the spirit of generosity and divine blessings. It is said that Lord Krishna blessed his poor friend Sudama with immense wealth on this day. Similarly, the Pandavas were gifted the Akshaya Patra – a magical vessel that would never run out of food. These stories inspire many to perform charity, start new ventures, and invest in assets like gold.
On Akshaya Tritiya, people wake up early, take holy baths, and offer prayers at temples. Many devotees perform Lakshmi Puja, offer sweets, and pray for wealth and prosperity. Weddings, housewarmings, and business inaugurations are often scheduled on this day because it is considered so auspicious that it requires no additional muhurat or timing.
One of the most loved traditions on this day is buying gold. Temples and jewellery shops witnessed long queues of devotees and customers, as families considered it lucky to purchase gold ornaments or coins, hoping it would bring never-ending wealth into their homes.
Gold Prices Soar on Akshaya Tritiya 2025
As expected, the demand for gold surged today. The price of 24-carat gold in Delhi stood at ₹97,693 per 10 grams, while 22-carat gold was priced at Rs 89,563 per 10 grams.
In Mumbai, India’s financial hub, 24 carat gold was sold at Rs 97,547 per 10 grams, and 22 carat gold at Rs 89,417. Similar trends were seen in other major cities like Bengaluru (Rs 97,535 for 24 carat and Rs 89,405 for 22 carat) and Chennai (Rs 97,541 and Rs 89,411, respectively).
Gold is seen as a symbol of wealth and security. On this day, people prefer to buy 24-carat gold, which is 99.99% pure. However, 22-carat gold is also very popular for jewellery, as it contains other metals like copper and zinc for added strength.
Global Gold Trends: US Market Steady Amid Trade Talks
While Indians continued their tradition of buying gold, international markets showed a steady trend. In the United States, gold prices remained stable today after a fall on Tuesday. This came as President Donald Trump eased certain auto tariffs, which suggested progress in trade negotiations with other countries.
According to Bloomberg, bullion was trading close to $3,316 an ounce, after falling by 0.8% the previous day. In Singapore, spot gold dipped slightly by 0.1% to $3,315.87 an ounce. Despite these fluctuations, uncertainty around global trade policies has increased demand for gold globally, with prices even touching a record high of $3,500 an ounce last week.
A Day of Hope, Wealth, and Positivity
In a world that is constantly changing, Akshaya Tritiya reminds people of faith, tradition, and the timeless belief in divine blessings. From gold purchases and rituals to prayers and new beginnings, the festival continues to bring a sense of hope and continuity. Whether through mythological stories or modern investments, this day holds a special place in the hearts of millions of Indians.
