On April 26, 1961, Maharaja Hari Singh, the last ruler of Jammu and Kashmir, passed away in Mumbai. Known for his bravery and intelligence, he ascended to the throne in 1925 after Maharaja Pratap Singh. Hari Singh, a Hindu king ruling over a Muslim majority, initiated significant reforms, including expanding technical education and healthcare, providing drinking water, and vaccinating children. Notably, in 1932, he opened all state temples for Dalits, preceding Gandhi's anti-untouchability movement. Following the India-Pakistan partition in 1947, Hari Singh signed the Instrument of Accession with India on October 26, 1947, integrating Jammu and Kashmir into the Indian Union.
