In a stern warning to the terrorist group, Hezbollah, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned the Iran-backed militant group to refrain from instigating the war or else Beirut, the capital of Lebanon, will be turned into Gaza and Khan Yunis.
The warning comes from the Israeli Prime Minister in the aftermath of a guided missile attack believed to be orchestrated by Hezbollah.
Notably, Israel has been facing a double sworded attack by Hezbollah and the Hamas since the beginning of the war on October 7; when the Palestinian terrorist group, Hamas, also backed by Iran, launched a scathing and surprise attack against Israel. In retaliation, Israel launched a ground offensive in the Gaza Strip
In the meantime, in a rare move the United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guteress decided to invoke Article 99 of the UN Charter on Gaza, urging the UN Security Council to act on the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
Informing on microblogging platform, X, Guteress stated that he has invoked Article 99 for the first time in the history of his tenure. He added that due to the severe risk of collapse of the humanitarian system in Gaza, he urged the Council to help avert a humanitarian catastrophe & appeal for a humanitarian ceasefire to be declared.
Article 99 states: “The Secretary-General may bring to the attention of the Security Council any matter which in his opinion may threaten the maintenance of international peace and security.”
The provision has been rarely invoked. Past examples include the upheaval in the Republic of the Congo in 1960 following the end of Belgium’s colonial rule and a complaint by Tunisia in 1961 against France’s naval and air forces launching an attack.
