Pakistan’s women’s cricket team faced a tough blow in their first One Day International (ODI) against New Zealand. Key player Diana Baig couldn’t play due to a finger injury sustained in practice, and during the match, skipper Nida Dar had to leave after being hit in the face while bowling. These setbacks significantly impacted Pakistan’s performance, and they ended up with a score of 234 while chasing New Zealand’s formidable 366.
Suzie Bates stole the show for New Zealand, scoring 108 runs, supported by Bernadine Bezuidenhout (86), Amelia Kerr (83), and Sophie Devine (70 from 36 balls). Together, they helped New Zealand reach an impressive total of 365/4, marking the second-highest total in a women’s ODI in New Zealand.
In response, Sidra Ameen gave a commendable performance, scoring 105 in 116 deliveries for Pakistan. However, the rest of the team’s middle-order couldn’t match up, leading to a collapse. New Zealand’s skipper, Amelia Kerr, took three wickets, and Lea Tahuhu claimed two, bringing New Zealand closer to victory.
Other Kiwi bowlers, including Jess Kerr, Fran Jonas, Hannah Rowe, and Sophie Devine, contributed with one wicket each, ending Pakistan’s innings at 234 with one ball to spare.
Looking ahead, Pakistan aims to bounce back in the next two ODIs. Skipper Nida Dar is expected to recover in time for the remaining clashes, but Diana Baig will be sidelined for the entire series. The upcoming ODIs are scheduled for December 15 and 18 at Hagley Oval.
