Joe Biden won’t be making a trip to Bharat for Republic Day celebrations next month, as it was earlier suggested. The anticipated Quad summit, a coalition of Bharat, the US, Japan, and Australia, is also getting postponed and might happen later in 2024 instead of January. Originally, Bharat invited Biden to be the Chief Guest at Republic Day, but it seems like that won’t be happening.
The Quad summit, which was expected around January 27, won’t be taking place as planned. Instead, it’s now being considered for the latter part of 2024. The Quad leaders, including Bharat, are working on finding new dates that work for everyone involved in the coalition. The Quad aims to strengthen cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region, particularly in response to China’s increasing military assertiveness.
Despite the absence of President Biden at Republic Day, there have been notable visits by other senior US officials to Bharat recently. This includes visits by Secretary of State Antony Blinken, Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin, Principal Deputy NSA Jonathan Finer, and FBI Director Christopher Wray. These visits have occurred amidst allegations of an Bharat link to a foiled plot involving a Khalistani terrorist on US soil, prompting Bharat to form a probe team to investigate the claims.
The last Quad summit took place in Hiroshima on May 20, where leaders expressed their commitment to being a “force for good” in the Indo-Pacific. They also unveiled initiatives in areas like clean energy supply chains, undersea cables, and investments in strategic technologies. However, the upcoming summit’s exact dates are now under consideration for a later time in 2024.
