The state government has given the green light to a proposal for a new city called the ‘Third Mumbai’. This city is planned around the Navi Mumbai International Airport and will be connected to Mumbai through the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL).

Development Authority and Area Inclusion: The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is set to reshape the far ends of MMR with the help of the New Town Development Authority (NTDA). NTDA will cover areas like Ulwe, Pen, Panvel, Uran, Karjat, and nearby regions, totaling 323 sq.kms.

The aim is to create a well-developed city with residential, commercial, and industrial facilities, including luxury and affordable housing, commercial complexes, data centers, and knowledge parks. The goal is to boost economic activity, contribute to the country’s GDP, and develop a second business district (BKC) in Kharghar.

The government plans to raise Mumbai’s GDP from $140 billion to $300 billion by 2030, with the proposed Third Mumbai playing a crucial role. The Mumbai Trans Harbour Link and Navi Mumbai International Airport are expected to boost India’s GDP by 1 percentage point.

To enhance public transportation, a new Panvel-Karjat suburban rail corridor is in progress, connecting Navi Mumbai with Raigad district. This project aims to reduce congestion in suburban trains and contribute to the overall development of the region.

Developers express concerns about affordable housing opportunities being hindered due to high development charges, emphasizing the need for the MMRDA to focus on both public infrastructure in Mumbai and the development of residential and commercial spaces in MMR.

In summary, the government is undertaking a comprehensive plan to create a new city, the Third Mumbai, around the Navi Mumbai International Airport. This development is part of a larger strategy to boost economic growth, improve infrastructure, and enhance public transportation in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
