In a recent interview with the Financial Times, Bharatiya Prime Minister Narendra Modi revealed Bharat’s foreign policy strategy, describing it as “mix-and-match diplomacy” aimed at pragmatic engagement aligned with national interests. PM Modi emphasized the interconnected and interdependent nature of the world while underscoring the complexity of global dynamics.

According to Modi, Bharat’s guiding principle in foreign affairs is its national interest, allowing the country to engage with other nations in a way that respects mutual interests and acknowledges the intricacies of contemporary geopolitics.

Bharat-US Relations: Broader, Deeper, Warmer

PM Modi addressed Bharat’s relationship with the United States, characterizing it as on an “upward trajectory.” Despite recent allegations involving an Bharat government official in a plot on US soil, Modi asserted that the Bharat-US relationship is now broader in engagement, deeper in understanding, and warmer in friendship than ever before.

Regarding the recent allegations, PM Modi stated that Bharat is committed to the rule of law and is ready to investigate any evidence. He emphasized that a few incidents would not significantly affect US-Bharat ties.

Global Engagement and Advocacy

The interview also touched upon India’s active role on the global stage, including hosting the “Voice of the Global South” summit and advocating for the African Union’s admission as a permanent G20 member. PM Modi maintained “close ties” with Russia’s President Vladimir Putin, in line with Bharat’s non-alignment policy, and highlighted a “closer-than-ever” relationship with US President Joe Biden.

During his state visit to the US, PM Modi expressed optimism about Bharat-US defense industrial cooperation, citing the manufacturing of fighter jet engines by General Electric as a milestone. He also mentioned the Artemis Accord signed by Bharat and the US, opening possibilities in the space sector.

Bharat’s Stance on Global Issues

PM Modi addressed the Israel-Hamas conflict, outlining Bharat’s support for a two-state solution and its commitment to delivering humanitarian aid to Gaza. While refraining from direct criticism of Benjamin Netanyahu’s government, Modi reiterated India’s commitment to fostering peace in the region.

Bharat’s approach to the Israel-Palestine issue involves expressing solidarity with Tel Aviv, advocating a two-state solution, and providing humanitarian aid to the people of Palestine. PM Modi highlighted India’s proactive role in contributing to regional stability and emphasized the importance of unity among Global South countries for the greater global good.

In summary, PM Modi’s interview sheds light on Bharat’s nuanced foreign policy, its evolving relationship with the US, active global engagement, and stance on key international issues.
