In recent news, the Foreign Affairs Secretary of the Philippines, Enrique Manalo, had a serious talk with China’s Foreign Minister, Wang Yi. They had an open and honest discussion about various issues, helping both countries better understand each other’s positions. Manalo stressed the importance of diplomatic talks, especially regarding tensions in the South China Sea.
During their conversation, Wang Yi pointed out that China and the Philippines are facing significant issues. He cautioned the Philippines to act with care, stating that the relationship between the two countries is at a crucial point. Wang Yi highlighted what he considered provocations by the Philippines at sea, actions that he believed undermined China’s legal rights.
The South China Sea has been a source of ongoing disagreement between China and the Philippines due to overlapping claims. Recent incidents involving fishing boats and military ships have added complexity to the maritime disputes.
On December 15, China rejected a recent statement from the US supporting the Philippines over West Philippine Sea aggression. The US criticized China’s use of water cannons against Philippine vessels delivering aid near Bajo de Masinloc. China defended its actions, asserting sovereignty, while the US reaffirmed support for the Philippines and the South China Sea Mutual Defense Treaty.
China accused the US of endorsing Philippine provocation and interference in West Philippine Sea disputes. The US emphasized that the People’s Republic of China has no lawful maritime claims to the waters around Second Thomas Shoal. The US reiterated its commitment to the Mutual Defense Treaty with the Philippines, extending protection to armed attacks in the South China Sea.
Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Mao Ning stated that the US statement was an attempt to endorse the Philippines’ infringement of Chinese sovereignty and provoke tensions. She emphasized that Scarborough Shoal has consistently been within China’s territory and accused the Philippines of entering its waters without permission on December 9.
Mao Ning defended China Coast Guard’s actions, stating they were in accordance with the law, professional, restrained, lawful, and legitimate. She criticized the US for persistently supporting the Philippines in the West Philippine Sea dispute, stating that it emboldened the Philippines’ violation of China’s sovereignty. Mao Ning concluded by asserting China’s firm resolve in safeguarding its territorial sovereignty and maritime rights and interests.
