In a significant move to boost the fishery sector, the Gujarat government has given the green light to a project aiming to establish 25 artificial reefs, with an estimated cost of Rs 7.75 crore. This initiative will witness a financial contribution of 60% from the central government and 40% from the Gujarat government. The artificial reefs are set to be strategically placed at a distance of 3 to 7 nautical miles from the coast across seven districts, including Gir, Somnath, Amreli, Junagadh, Porbandar, Devbhoomi Dwarka, Jamnagar, and Kutch.
The “Promotion of Sustainable Fisheries and Livelihood through Artificial Reef” project aims to leverage the centuries-old technique of artificial reefs, which has evolved over time in terms of purpose, materials, and applications. Similar to natural reefs, these artificial structures will serve as homes for fish, fostering their growth and creating a safe environment for small fish to thrive.
Gujarat, boasting the longest coastline in the country at 1,600 km, holds immense potential for fish production. The state has witnessed remarkable growth in fish production over the last two decades. The artificial reefs are designed to mimic natural habitats, providing protection for marine life and acting as artificial breeding grounds.
According to Fisheries Minister Raghavji Patel, each artificial reef will consist of 250 modules, with one module priced at Rs 12,400. The total estimated cost for one reef is set at Rs 31 lakh, as per specifications notified by the central government. This initiative is expected to contribute significantly to the sustainable development of the fishery sector in Gujarat.
Meanwhile, on a broader economic front, the Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit, initiated by PM Narendra Modi in 2003, is gearing up for its tenth edition from January 10 to 12, 2024. The event aims to position Gujarat on the world map of trade and industry and will be inaugurated by PM Modi himself on January 10.
