The American stand up comedian, actress, writer, producer and director Ali Wong has become the first Asian origin actress to win the 2024 Golden Globe in a limited series for her performance as Amy Lau in the ‘Beef.’
Beef is a 2023 American comedy-drama television limited series created by Korean director Lee Sung Jin for Netflix. The show stars Steven Yeun and Ali Wong as Danny Cho and Amy Lau, two people who cross paths in the weirdest way possible. The two continue to engage in a feud after a road rage incident. Patti Yasutake, Young Mazino, David Choe, and Joseph Lee are also part of the cast.
Beef, a dark comedy with overt twists and existential connotations was Wong’s first swing at drama. Previously, she has acted in rom-com Always be My Maybe. She is also a stand up comedian and has several stand ups to her name. The actor has also bagged an Emmy nomination for her role of Amu Lau, an entrepreneur, wife and a mother.

In her speech Wong thanked her former spouse Justin Hakuta, “I really need to thank the father of my children and my best friend, Justin for all of your love and support,” she said. “It’s because of you that I’m able to be a working mother,” Wong added.
The show, ‘Beef’ which won the Golden Globe for best television limited series revolves around struggling, high strung contractor Danny and unfulfilled business owner Amy. The series after releasing on Netflix in April immediately won critical acclaim and got praised for highlighting the variou issues faced by Asian Americans.
