The 2024 Golden Globes ceremony took place recently, and the winner for the Best Motion Picture in the Musical or Comedy category was “Poor Things.” The other nominees included “Air,” “American Fiction,” “Barbie,” “The Holdovers,” and “May December.”
“Poor Things,” directed by Yorgos Lanthimos and written by Tony McNamara, is a science fantasy black comedy film based on the 1992 novel by Alasdair Gray. The star-studded cast includes Emma Stone, Mark Ruffalo, Willem Dafoe, Ramy Youssef, Christopher Abbott, and Jerrod Carmichael.
During his acceptance speech, director Yorgos Lanthimos expressed his admiration for Bruce Springsteen, whom he has looked up to since childhood. Lanthimos and Springsteen share the same birthday on the 23rd of September. The filmmaker also extended his gratitude to the “Poor Things” cast and crew, giving special mention to Emma Stone, whom he referred to as “the best.”
Emma Stone, who plays the lead role of Bella Baxter—a woman resurrected with the brain of a baby by a scientist portrayed by Willem Dafoe—won the acting award. The film follows Bella’s journey as she navigates human society, travels the world with Mark Ruffalo’s womanizing lawyer character, and evolves into a women’s rights activist.
Apart from Emma Stone’s win, Willem Dafoe and Mark Ruffalo were also nominated for acting awards, and Yorgos Lanthimos received a nomination for Best Director. “Poor Things” also garnered nods for Best Screenplay and Best Original Score.
The 81st edition of the Golden Globes took place at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California, where the achievements of “Poor Things” and its talented cast were celebrated.
