Glassdoor Survey: Google, Microsoft, and Meta Drop from Top Spots as Best Places to Work

In the latest release of Glassdoor’s annual list of the top 100 companies to work for in 2024, significant shifts have been observed, notably with tech giants Google and Microsoft experiencing notable declines in their rankings. Google slipped from the 8th position to 26th, while Microsoft plummeted from 13th to 18th. Moreover, companies like Meta, Zillow, and Zoom did not make it to the list for the second consecutive year.

The list, which typically focuses on companies in the UK and US with 1,000 or more employees, is determined based on feedback from workers. The rankings, disclosed on January 10, highlight a trend of diminished satisfaction among employees.

Several tech companies that were part of the list in the previous year, including Gainsight and Box, dropped off this year. The total number of tech companies on the list also decreased from 41 to 31. This decline is seen against the backdrop of a challenging year for the tech industry, which witnessed layoffs exceeding 260,000 in 2023, and more than 2,000 layoffs reported in the first nine days of 2024.

Employee dissatisfaction seems to be rooted in factors such as layoffs, demanding work hours, and perceived mismanagement, as indicated by Glassdoor reviews. Daniel Zhao, Glassdoor’s lead economist, noted that even traditionally stable large companies were facing increased concerns among employees about the business outlook.

However, amidst the negative trend, Apple managed to secure the 39th spot on the list after being absent last year. The company’s relatively lower number of layoffs compared to its peers likely contributed to its positive ranking. In contrast, chipmaker NVIDIA claimed the second spot, with management consulting firm Bain & Company securing the top position.

Here is the list of the top 20 companies on Glassdoor’s 2024 ranking:

  1. Bain & Company
  2. NVIDIA
  3. ServiceNow
  4. MathWorks
  5. Procore Technologies
  6. In-N-Out Burger
  7. VMware

  9. 2020 Companies
  10. Fidelity Investments
  11. Crew Carwash

  14. Raymond James Financial
