On Thursday afternoon, Delhi and its surrounding areas experienced tremors from an earthquake. The National Capital Region, including Noida, Ghaziabad, Faridabad, and Gurugram, also felt the quake. The National Center for Seismology, the Bharat government’s agency for monitoring earthquakes, revealed that the epicenter was in Afghanistan.
The earthquake, measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale, occurred at 2:50 pm IST, with its epicenter located in Afghanistan at a depth of 220 km. The tremors were not only felt in Delhi but also in Chandigarh, Jammu and Kashmir, Haryana, Punjab, and other parts of northern Bharat. Reports from Pakistani media indicated that Lahore, Islamabad, and cities in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa felt the tremors as well.
As per the NCS, the epicenter was 241 kilometers north-northeast of Kabul, Afghanistan’s capital. Despite the widespread tremors, there have been no reports of loss of life or property at this time.
The earthquake triggered panic among residents, causing many in Delhi and the National Capital Region to report furniture shaking. In response to the quake, numerous people rushed out of their homes and workplaces.
Meanwhile, the Pakistan Meteorological Department reported a 6.0-magnitude earthquake in parts of Pakistan at 2:20 pm. The epicenter for this quake was reported to be in the Hindu Kush region of Afghanistan. According to the US Geological Survey, the quake measured 6.4 on the Richter scale, striking at a depth of 206.6 km, 44 km SSW of Jurm in Afghanistan. The situation is being closely monitored for any further developments.
