In a recent diplomatic move, Bharat’s High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Pranay Verma, paid a courtesy call on Bangladesh’s new Foreign Minister, Hasan Mahmud. The meeting aimed to discuss and enhance bilateral cooperation in the fresh term of the Bangladesh government. Pranay Verma conveyed the warm greetings of Bharat’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar to Hasan Mahmud during the meeting, where various issues were addressed to promote collaboration between the two nations.
Hasan Mahmud, the newly appointed Foreign Minister, took over from Abdul Momen, previously entrusted with the responsibilities of Bangladesh’s Ministry of Information and Broadcasting in the preceding term. The Bharat High Commission in Bangladesh shared details of the meeting on their official platform, emphasizing the broad spectrum of topics covered in advancing India-Bangladesh relations in the new government’s tenure.
Earlier this month, on January 8, Pranay Verma also met with Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, conveying warm regards from Bharat Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The meeting celebrated Sheikh Hasina’s historic victory in the parliamentary elections, securing her fourth consecutive term. Prime Minister Modi congratulated Sheikh Hasina and expressed India’s commitment to strengthening the enduring and people-centric partnership between the two countries.
In an official statement shared on social media, Prime Minister Modi reiterated his commitment to deepening ties with Bangladesh, emphasizing the successful conduct of the elections. The Awami League, Sheikh Hasina’s party, secured 223 seats, marking a significant victory in the elections held on January 7. Sheikh Hasina received 249,962 votes, securing her fifth term as the Prime Minister.
The election results showed a clear mandate for Sheikh Hasina’s leadership, with her party dominating the seats. The opposition parties, including the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Jamaat-e-Islami, and like-minded groups, boycotted the elections and observed a countrywide strike. However, despite some political challenges, the focus remains on strengthening diplomatic ties between Bharat and Bangladesh in the coming years.
As the new Foreign Minister Hasan Mahmud assumes office, both countries look forward to fostering cooperation and building on the foundations of a strong and enduring partnership. The recent diplomatic engagements between the two nations reflect a commitment to mutual growth and development, setting the stage for positive collaboration in the future.
