The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) recently revealed footage of a tunnel located in southern Gaza, in the center of Khan Younis, where Hamas was suspected of holding hostages. According to CNN, the tunnel stretched approximately 830 meters (0.51 miles) at a depth of 20 meters (66 feet).
The IDF claimed that the tunnel contained booby traps, explosives, and various obstacles. As the IDF entered the tunnel, they reportedly encountered and eliminated several Hamas operatives. The military posted on X stating, “This is where Hamas held hostages,” emphasizing their commitment to rescuing innocent civilians.
Despite an intensive search, the IDF found no hostages in the tunnel. However, based on testimonies from former hostages and DNA evidence, they asserted that approximately 20 hostages had been held there at different times. Some had been released, while others remained in captivity in Gaza.
IDF Releases Footage Depicting Inside of the Tunnel
Videos shared by the IDF depicted long tunnels leading to rooms with scattered mattresses, blankets, food wrappers, and areas resembling kitchens and bathrooms. The military also showcased photos of child’s drawings, attributing them to Emilia Aloni, a five-year-old former hostage. Emilia and her mother were reportedly released in November during a brief truce between Hamas and Israel, allowing for the exchange of hostages and Palestinian prisoners.
Claims of Remaining Hostages in Gaza
Israel estimates that 132 hostages from the October 7 attacks are still in Gaza, with 25 believed to be dead. The IDF’s actions reflect their determination to address the issue of hostages, emphasizing the ongoing efforts to bring them home.
The situation highlights the complex challenges faced by the IDF in navigating tunnels used for both military and civilian purposes. As tensions persist in the region, the issue of hostage-taking remains a critical concern, impacting both Israeli and Palestinian communities.
