Donald Trump, the former U.S. president, secured victories in the Republican presidential nominating caucuses held in Nevada and the U.S. Virgin Islands. These wins bring him closer to clinching the Republican Party’s nomination for the upcoming presidential election, where he’s anticipated to face off against incumbent President Joe Biden once again.
In Nevada, Trump emerged as the frontrunner, being the sole major candidate in the race. This led to his projected victory, securing all 26 delegates from the state for the party’s nominating convention in July. Similarly, in the U.S. Virgin Islands, Trump easily triumphed, adding four more delegates to his count.
Despite his dominance, there was a notable setback for his opponent Nikki Haley in the Nevada primary earlier in the week. Despite being the only major candidate on the ballot, she faced a humiliating defeat with a significant portion of votes going to “none of these candidates.”
Trump also spent the day monitoring a case related to his eligibility for the ballot in Colorado, where he faces accusations of involvement in the January 6, 2021, Capitol attack. The Supreme Court hearings on this matter garnered Trump’s attention, with the justices expressing skepticism about Colorado’s actions.
Following his victories, Trump addressed supporters in Las Vegas, expressing gratitude for their support and highlighting the ongoing legal battles regarding his candidacy. Meanwhile, Haley, his remaining rival, is determined to continue her campaign, despite facing overwhelming odds and trailing badly in opinion polls.
The conflicting Republican ballots in Nevada underscored a power struggle between the state party, aligned with Trump, and a 2021 state law mandating primaries. While Trump opted for the caucus, Haley contested in the primary, leading to differing outcomes.
Looking ahead, Nevada is expected to be a crucial battleground in the presidential election, given its swing voter population and recent history of close contests. With about 30% of its population identifying as Latino or Hispanic, both parties are vying to make inroads with this demographic, making Nevada a key focus in the upcoming election cycle.
