Russian President Vladimir Putin has declared a significant victory for his army with the capture of the key eastern Ukrainian town of Avdiivka. The town, which served as a vital defensive position for Ukraine’s armed forces, has now fallen into Russian control. Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu informed Putin about the seizure in a meeting at the Kremlin, marking a strategic shift in the ongoing conflict.
Avdiivka’s capture is seen as a crucial advancement for Russia, moving the front line away from Donetsk and reducing Ukraine’s ability to shell the Russian stronghold. The town had been fiercely contested, witnessing heavy fighting and months of Russian assaults, including airstrikes, artillery bombardment, and ground assaults.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy acknowledged the withdrawal of troops from Avdiivka as a necessary decision to preserve Ukrainian lives. Despite efforts to defend the town, Ukrainian forces faced encirclement by Russian troops, leading to the strategic retreat.
The battle for Avdiivka has been one of the bloodiest in the two-year conflict, with comparisons drawn to the battle for Bakhmut, where tens of thousands of soldiers lost their lives. The town, once home to approximately 34,000 inhabitants, now lies largely destroyed, with only a fraction of its residents remaining amidst the devastation.
The withdrawal from Avdiivka comes amid growing concerns over Russia’s intentions, particularly with the upcoming presidential elections in Russia. President Putin’s bid for a fifth term has raised fears of continued aggression towards Ukraine, further destabilizing the region.
At the Munich Security Conference, President Zelenskyy urged countries to provide Ukraine with longer-range weapons and increased air defense systems. He emphasized the importance of countering Putin’s aggression by strengthening Ukraine’s military capabilities.
Meanwhile, US President Joe Biden highlighted the risks faced by Avdiivka due to ammunition shortages, citing months of opposition from Republican lawmakers to a new US military aid package for Ukraine. The lack of support has left Ukraine vulnerable to Russian advances, heightening the urgency for international assistance in the face of escalating tensions.
