A tragic terrorist attack shook Mogadishu on Thursday night, resulting in three fatalities and injuring 27 people at the SYL Hotel near Somalia’s presidential palace, as reported by Somalia National Television (SNTV).
According to SNTV, the attack involved five armed gunmen storming the SYL Hotel, prompting a swift response from Somali security forces who neutralized the assailants, all of whom were killed during the operation.
The assault claimed the lives of three soldiers while leaving 27 others wounded. Many guests, including government officials, were safely evacuated from the premises by security forces.
Although the perpetrators were not initially identified by SNTV, Somali police spokesman Colonel Qasim Ahmed Roble confirmed to AFP that the attackers belonged to the terrorist group Al-Shabaab.
Somalian President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud expressed solidarity with the victims by visiting those injured in the attack at Erdoğan Hospital in Mogadishu on Friday, according to reports from the state broadcaster.
The United States Embassy in Mogadishu strongly condemned the terrorist act, reaffirming its commitment to support Somalia’s efforts in combating Al-Shabaab. The embassy’s statement underscored the ongoing presence of fewer than 500 US troops in Somalia, aiding the government’s fight against the militant group.
Josep Borrell, the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, joined in condemning the assault, praising the efforts of Somali security forces in neutralizing the assailants and bringing the operation to a successful conclusion.
The United Nations in Somalia highlighted the attack’s violation of the sanctity of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, emphasizing the need to uphold the values of peace and compassion during this time of reflection and devotion.
The incident serves as a stark reminder of the persistent threat posed by extremist groups like Al-Shabaab in Somalia and underscores the importance of continued international support for the country’s efforts to combat terrorism and restore stability.
