The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) has taken Orlando Commissioner Regina Hill into custody, charging her with multiple offenses including exploitation of the elderly, mortgage fraud, and scheme to defraud. Commissioner Hill was released on a $40,000 bond following her arrest earlier in the day.
The allegations against Commissioner Hill involve the exploitation of a 96-year-old resident in her district. It is claimed that she misappropriated thousands of dollars from the elderly victim’s savings for personal use.
FDLE agents discovered evidence suggesting that Hill used her influence to fraudulently obtain a power of attorney over the victim. This betrayal of trust has sparked outrage, with officials expressing concern over Hill’s exploitation of a vulnerable member of the community.
Lee Massie of the FDLE emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating that Hill effectively betrayed the trust of her community by taking advantage of an elderly citizen.
The investigation revealed that Hill initially became acquainted with the elderly woman through her role as a city commissioner. What began as the provision of beneficial services allegedly evolved into fraudulent activities.
Further investigations indicate that Hill used the power of attorney to make significant financial decisions on behalf of the victim, including purchasing a home in the victim’s name. Additionally, she is accused of using the victim’s finances to fund a lavish lifestyle, including luxury items and expensive perfumes.
Despite the severity of the charges, Hill’s attorney emphasized her presumption of innocence and highlighted her past contributions to the community. He urged the public to consider her positive impact alongside the allegations against her.
In response to Hill’s arrest, the city of Orlando clarified that they lack the authority to discipline an elected official, as that power rests with the Governor. Governor Ron DeSantis stated that he would suspend a municipal elected official indicted by a grand jury, highlighting the legal process that governs such matters.
