President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine has issued a stark warning to the US Congress, stating that Ukrainian forces may need to give up more territory to Russia if urgent military aid doesn’t arrive soon. He emphasized the critical need for a multibillion-dollar aid package, particularly $60 billion earmarked for Ukraine, to bolster defense capabilities.
Zelensky highlighted the dire consequences of the lack of support, citing the absence of vital defense systems such as air defense, Patriot missiles, electronic warfare jammers, and artillery rounds. Without these resources, Ukraine would be compelled to scale back its defenses, potentially leading to further territorial losses and endangering major cities.
The Ukrainian president explained the practical challenges of insufficient resources, noting that when faced with a shortage of artillery rounds, for instance, they would be forced to reduce defensive actions, possibly shortening the front line. He expressed concerns that if defenses weaken, Russian forces could advance toward major urban centers, posing a significant threat to Ukraine’s sovereignty.
Since the onset of Russia’s invasion over two years ago, much of eastern Ukraine has remained under Russian military control. Recent developments, including Ukraine’s withdrawal from Avdiivka and increased Russian attacks on border villages, indicate a shifting balance of power in Russia’s favor.
Despite the Senate’s approval of a $95 billion international aid package, uncertainties persist in passing it through the House of Representatives. Republicans and Democrats have differing priorities and concerns, potentially complicating the passage of the aid bill.
In response to the urgency, House Speaker Mike Johnson has signaled openness to exploring alternative bipartisan solutions. However, the timing of any potential action remains uncertain, with discussions expected to resume after the Easter recess.
Meanwhile, Ukraine is actively seeking ways to prevent further retreats and stabilize the frontline situation. President Zelensky emphasized the importance of swift action from Congress, stressing that Ukraine’s security should transcend political divides and partisan interests.
