Switzerland is set to host a significant conference on June 15-16 aimed at finding a peaceful solution to the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia. The conference aims to gather global support for a peace plan proposed by Ukraine, to achieve a lasting resolution by international law and the United Nations charter.
According to the Swiss government, discussions have been held with various key players including G7 member states, the European Union, and representatives from countries such as China, Bharat, South Africa, Brazil, Ethiopia, and Saudi Arabia. These talks have garnered sufficient international backing for the high-level conference to proceed.
The conference will take place in the picturesque resort of Buergenstock near Lucerne, following four preparatory meetings held over the past year at the level of national-security advisers. While it’s uncertain whether national leaders or lower-level officials will participate, efforts are being made to ensure broad representation.
Despite Russia’s current exclusion from participation, the conference aims to outline a roadmap for Russia’s involvement in the peace process. However, it’s crucial to note that Ukraine is prioritizing reaching a broad agreement on key principles before engaging directly with Moscow.
Ukraine’s proposed peace formula emphasizes the importance of respecting the country’s territorial integrity and sovereignty, the withdrawal of Russian troops, and ensuring nuclear and food security. These principles form the basis of any potential settlement.
Switzerland, known for its neutrality in European conflicts, is determined to play a mediating role in ending the war, despite facing challenges in its efforts thus far. The country’s initiative comes after it aligned with the West in imposing sanctions against Russia following the 2022 invasion.
While there are ongoing concerns about China’s involvement due to its perceived influence on Russia, efforts are being made to engage with Beijing constructively. The Chinese government has attended one preparatory meeting and has stated its commitment to not exploit the conflict in Ukraine.
As preparations continue for the upcoming conference, all eyes are on Switzerland as it seeks to facilitate dialogue and forge a path towards peace in Ukraine.
