In a recent development concerning the criminal case involving former President Donald Trump’s hush money payments, Judge Juan M. Merchan declined Trump’s plea to delay the trial due to extensive media coverage. This decision marks the latest in a series of setbacks for Trump, who has faced repeated denials for trial postponement from various courts throughout the week.
Trump’s legal team argued that the intense media scrutiny surrounding the case had tainted the potential jury pool, making it impossible for a fair trial to proceed. However, Judge Merchan dismissed these concerns, emphasizing that Trump’s own actions, particularly his public statements and social media activity, had significantly contributed to the media attention surrounding the case.
Despite the denial, Trump expressed his intention to testify at the trial, labeling the case as a “scam” and asserting his commitment to truthfulness. He criticized the trial process, describing it as largely dependent on luck in jury selection.
Trump’s lawyers had previously raised objections regarding the prejudicial media coverage and the prosecution’s handling of key witnesses, such as Michael Cohen and Stormy Daniels. They also highlighted the recent prosecution of Allen Weisselberg, the former Trump Organization finance chief, accusing the Manhattan District Attorney’s office of unethical practices.
While Trump’s legal team continues to pursue avenues for delaying the trial, including appeals to higher courts, the trial is scheduled to proceed as planned, marking the first criminal trial of a former president in U.S. history.
