IAEA, a prominent organization fostering cooperation in the peaceful applications of nuclear energy, has roots tracing back to President Eisenhower’s groundbreaking ‘Atoms for Peace’ speech.
Bharat has been actively engaged with IAEA since its inception, holding a designated membership status alongside nations like the US, China, and Russia. This designation allows Bharat to serve on the Board of Governors of IAEA, where it consistently advocates for the agency’s mission in promoting peaceful nuclear science and technology.
Bharat’s involvement in IAEA extends beyond mere participation in administrative functions. The nation actively contributes to various advisory groups and technical committees within the agency. Through offering expertise, organizing training sessions, and occasionally providing equipment, India demonstrates its commitment to advancing the peaceful use of nuclear energy on the global stage.
Notably, Bharat’s engagement with IAEA is its support for the International Project on Innovative Reactors and Fuel Cycles (INPRO), of which Bharat is a founding member. Annually, Bharat contributes USD 50,000 towards this initiative, showcasing its dedication to fostering innovation and sustainability in nuclear energy technologies.
Ambassador Kumaran’s induction into IAEA signifies Bharat’s continued commitment to international collaboration in harnessing the potential of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes.
With Bharat’s active participation and support, IAEA’s initiatives are poised to make significant strides in addressing global challenges and promoting sustainable development through nuclear technology.
