In a recent development, Iraq’s Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF), an official security force, reported a significant explosion at its command post located at Kalso military base, approximately 50 km (30 miles) south of Baghdad. The incident occurred late on Friday, and according to two security sources, it is believed to have resulted from an airstrike.
Tragically, one PMF fighter lost their life in the explosion, while six others sustained injuries, as confirmed by sources at a hospital in the nearby city of Hilla.
The PMF issued a statement acknowledging the incident, stating, “The blast has caused material damage and injuries.” They also mentioned that an investigative team has been dispatched to assess the situation further.
Despite the circumstances, the responsible party behind the airstrike remains unclear. A U.S. official denied any military activity in Iraq around the time of the incident. However, sources indicated that Israel had conducted an attack on Iranian territory just prior to the explosion. This action followed a series of events where Iran had reportedly launched drones and missiles at Israel.
The PMF, initially a coalition of armed factions with close ties to Iran, has since been formally recognized as a legitimate security force by Iraqi authorities. While factions within the PMF had previously engaged in rocket and drone attacks against U.S. forces in Iraq, these activities ceased in early February.
The incident underscores the ongoing tensions and complexities within the region, raising concerns about potential escalation and the involvement of various actors in the volatile landscape of the Middle East.
