In a move that has raised questions internationally, China has launched the first of eight advanced Hangor-class submarines destined for its close ally Pakistan. This development marks a significant step in their growing military cooperation, despite Pakistan facing allegations of supporting terrorism.
The launch ceremony, which took place at Wuchang Shipbuilding Industry Group’s Shuangliu Base, was attended by high-ranking officials from the Pakistan Navy, including Admiral Naveed Ashraf. These submarines are part of a larger agreement between Islamabad and Beijing, where China has committed to providing Pakistan with eight cutting-edge submarines.
Under this agreement, four of the submarines will be constructed by the Wuchang Shipbuilding Industry Group, while the remaining four will be built at Karachi Shipyard & Engineering Works, with technology transfer from China.
These submarines boast advanced stealth capabilities and will be equipped with state-of-the-art weapons and sensors to operate effectively in various threat environments.
Admiral Ashraf highlighted the importance of maritime security in the current geo-strategic landscape, emphasizing the Pakistan Navy’s commitment to regional peace and stability. He also lauded the Hangor-class submarine project as a testament to the enduring friendship between Pakistan and China, showcasing their robust military cooperation.
Despite this display of solidarity, concerns linger regarding Pakistan’s alleged support for terrorist activities. Critics argue that by providing advanced military equipment to Pakistan, China may inadvertently be aiding a country accused of fostering terrorism in the region.
Friday’s launch ceremony follows Pakistan’s initiation of the construction of the sixth Hangor-class submarine earlier this year, furtherly solidifying the strategic partnership between China and Pakistan in the realm of naval defense.
Pakistan-China military ties have deepened in recent years, with Pakistan importing various arms and equipment from China. Pakistan Navy welcomed two Chinese Type 054 A/P frigates into its fleet last year, as part of a larger contract for four multi-role frigates signed in 2018.
The induction of these advanced submarines and frigates underscores the strengthening military alliance between China and Pakistan, despite international concerns about Pakistan’s alleged support for terrorism.
As China continues to provide military assistance to Pakistan, questions remain about the implications of such support on regional stability and counter-terrorism efforts.
