President Volodymyr Zelenskiy of Ukraine has stressed the urgency for quicker deliveries of vital US weapons to combat the advancing Russian invasion forces.
In a joint press conference with NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg in Kyiv, Zelenskiy emphasized the critical link between the speed of ammunition supplies and the situation on the battlefield.
Zelenskiy expressed concern over the slow pace of support for the Ukrainian army, noting that while some supplies have started arriving, the process needs to be accelerated. He underscored the importance of timely assistance from allies, particularly amid the ongoing conflict with Russian forces.
The United States recently approved a $61 billion aid package for Ukraine, ending months of congressional deadlock. This move raised hopes in Kyiv for the replenishment of critically low stocks of artillery shells and other essential equipment necessary for defense against Russian aggression.
However, Stoltenberg acknowledged that NATO members had not fully delivered on their promises of military aid in recent months. He assured Ukrainians that the flow of arms and ammunition would increase, citing the US aid bill and commitments from other NATO allies like the UK, Germany, and the Netherlands.
Despite Russian claims that increased Western weaponry will not alter the situation on the front lines, Zelenskiy remains adamant about the significance of international support. He warned of Russia’s preparations for offensive actions and stressed the importance of stabilizing the front through swift deliveries of supplies.
Ukraine’s top military commander revealed that Ukrainian troops had withdrawn from three villages in the east, where Russian forces are advancing.
Zelenskiy reiterated his concerns about a potential major offensive from Russia in the coming months, urging immediate action from NATO allies.
Stoltenberg echoed Zelenskiy’s sentiments, stating that it is not too late for Ukraine to prevail against Russian aggression. He emphasized the urgency for NATO allies to fulfill their commitments and expedite the delivery of weapons and ammunition to Ukraine.
Of particular importance to Ukraine are sophisticated Patriot air defense systems, which it seeks to obtain from allies to counter Russia’s long-range missile and drone strikes. Zelenskiy highlighted the need for missiles and launchers to better protect Ukrainian cities and critical infrastructure from Russian attacks.
As Ukraine continues to face escalating tensions and threats from Russia, the timely delivery of military aid from international allies remains crucial in bolstering its defense capabilities and safeguarding its sovereignty.
