Switzerland announced on Thursday that Russia has not been invited to participate in peace talks set to take place in mid-June in Switzerland. These talks aim to find solutions to the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, with representatives from 160 delegations expected to attend.
The Swiss government emphasized the importance of involving Russia in the peace process. They stated that achieving peace without Russia’s participation is not feasible. Despite this, Russia has repeatedly expressed disinterest in attending the initial summit.
Russian officials cited Switzerland’s alignment with EU sanctions against Moscow due to its invasion of Ukraine as a reason for their skepticism about Switzerland’s neutrality in brokering peace talks.
The decision to host these peace talks came in response to a request from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, indicating Switzerland’s commitment to facilitating dialogue and resolution in the region.
Invitations have been extended to members of prominent international groups such as the G7, G20, BRICS, and the EU, along with representatives from various international organizations and two religious figures.
The Swiss government clarified that the primary goal of the talks is to establish a framework for achieving lasting peace in Ukraine and to outline a roadmap for Russia’s involvement in the peace process.
Scheduled for June 15-16, the talks will be held at the Bürgenstock resort in the canton of Nidwalden, situated outside the city of Lucerne. This location offers a serene and neutral setting conducive to productive discussions among the participating delegations.
Switzerland’s exclusion of Russia from the upcoming peace talks underscores the complexities and challenges involved in finding a resolution to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
Despite efforts to involve all relevant parties, including Russia, concerns regarding neutrality and diplomatic relations persist. The success of these talks will hinge on constructive engagement and commitment from all participating countries towards achieving a peaceful resolution to the ongoing crisis.
