This weekend, a peace summit focused on the ongoing conflict in Ukraine will take place at the Buergenstock resort near Lucerne, Switzerland. Bharat is the only South Asian country attending the summit, represented by Pavan Kapoor, Secretary (West) in the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).
More than 90 countries and several organizations, including the United Nations, have confirmed their participation. About half of these participating countries are from Europe. Notable attendees include high-profile leaders such as UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, US Vice President Kamala Harris, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. The summit aims to chart a path toward peace in Ukraine.
However, some significant countries are absent from the summit, this also includes Russia, China, and Pakistan as notable absentees. Russia was not invited to the summit, while China declined the invitation, stating that without Russia’s participation, Ukraine’s attendance would make the summit meaningless. Beijing criticized the event as a platform for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to promote his “peace formula.”
Despite the absence of these countries, the summit will proceed with a strong international presence. Organizers hope to make progress in finding a peaceful resolution to the conflict in Ukraine. The presence of many influential world leaders underscores the global importance of the issue.
Bharat’s participation highlights its interest in contributing to international peace efforts. By attending the summit, Bharat aims to support diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict and bring stability to the region.
