A series of deadly attacks in southern Russia’s Belgorod region has left 5 people dead, as per the official’s report. The incidents occurred on Friday and were attributed to Ukrainian shelling. Vyacheslav Gladkov, the regional governor, reported on the Telegram messaging app that two bodies were recovered from a multi-floor apartment building in the town of Shebekino, which was hit by Ukrainian artillery fire.
Emergency services confirmed that a third casualty was discovered in the rubble after shelling caused a stairwell to collapse in the same apartment building. In addition, a drone strike targeted a car in a nearby village, resulting in the death of the driver. Further west in the village of Oktyabrsky, a woman lost her life when her home was struck by rocket fire.
Ukrainian attacks on Belgorod and other Russian border regions have intensified in recent months, leading to heightened tensions between the two nations. President Vladimir Putin cited these attacks as justification for a cross-border incursion into Ukraine’s Kharkiv region last month. Russian military sources claimed to have captured approximately twelve settlements as part of this operation, although Ukrainian authorities have stated that their forces have successfully contained the advance.
The situation remains tense as both sides accuse each other of escalating the conflict. The international community has expressed growing concern over the escalating violence and its potential to further destabilize the region.

Efforts to negotiate a ceasefire have so far been unsuccessful, with both Russia and Ukraine accusing each other of violating previous agreements aimed at de-escalating tensions.
Responding to the recent attacks, Russian authorities have vowed to retaliate and strengthen their military presence along the border. Ukrainian officials have condemned the violence in Belgorod but maintain that their actions are defensive measures against Russian aggression. The United Nations and several nations have called for restraint and a return to dialogue to prevent further loss of life and restore peace in the region.
