This year, the International Day of Yoga was celebrated under the theme ‘Yoga for Self and Society’. Yoga, an ancient practice that originated in India, focuses on the union of body and consciousness. The word ‘yoga’ comes from Sanskrit, meaning to join or unite.
The International Day of Yoga was established by a United Nations resolution in December 2014. The resolution, proposed by India, designated June 21 as the day to celebrate yoga, aligning with the Summer Solstice, the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi first introduced this proposal during the opening of the 69th session of the UN General Assembly.
Since its inception in 2015, the International Day of Yoga has been celebrated worldwide, raising awareness about yoga’s numerous physical, mental, and spiritual benefits. Indian embassies and missions around the world participate in the celebrations, reflecting the global influence and appeal of yoga.
The Tokyo event at Tsukiji Hongwanji Temple exemplified this global spirit, showcasing yoga’s ability to bring people together, regardless of weather challenges. The overwhelming participation underscored yoga’s growing popularity and its role in promoting health and well-being in society.
