A trade union leader has called for strict measures against “barbaric exploitation” following the tragic death of Satnam Singh, an Indian farm worker in Italy. Singh’s employer is accused of abandoning him on a road after he suffered a severe accident that resulted in the loss of his arm.
Satnam Singh, 31, was working on farm equipment maintenance on Monday in Latina, a rural area near Rome with a significant population of Indian immigrants. While operating a plastic roller wrapping machine attached to a tractor, Singh sustained severe injuries. His arm was reportedly amputated on the street outside his home in Borgo Santa Maria.
Singh’s wife immediately alerted the police. An air ambulance was dispatched to take him to the San Camillo Forlalini hospital in Rome. Unfortunately, Singh succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday.
The Italian company employing Singh is now under investigation. Authorities are looking into charges of neglect, violation of industrial safety rules, and manslaughter. Initial findings suggest a serious lack of assistance and safety measures for workers.

Italy’s Labour Minister, Marina Calderone, condemned the incident, calling it a “true act of barbarity.” She expressed hope that those responsible would face punishment. “The Indian agricultural worker who suffered a serious accident in the countryside of Latina and was abandoned in very serious conditions … has died,” she told parliament.
Agriculture Minister Francesco Lollobrigida stated that the government is committed to fighting all forms of labor exploitation. He emphasized that this tragedy should not be ignored and that thorough investigations are necessary.
The center-left Democratic Party (PD) strongly criticized the treatment of Singh, describing it as a “defeat for civilization.” They urged the government to take decisive action against the “agro-mafias” that control migrant labor operations.
