A passenger train traveling through Russia’s Komi region derailed on Wednesday, causing injuries to at least 70 passengers. The incident involved nine train cars overturning near the town of Inta in the Komi Republic. The train, known as Train 511, was carrying 232 passengers on its route from Vorkuta in northeastern Komi to Novorossiysk, a major port on the Black Sea.
The derailment occurred at approximately 6:12 pm Moscow time, prompting an immediate response from emergency services. Russian Railways, via Telegram, confirmed the dispatch of emergency teams to assist passengers.
At this time, efforts are focused on clarifying information about the injured, and rail traffic in the affected area has been suspended.
Officials suspect heavy rainfall as a potential cause of the derailment, as reported by Russian Railways. Fortunately, authorities from Russia’s Investigative Committee have indicated that there were no fatalities in the incident near Inta.
Reports from police and emergency services have detailed injuries such as fractures, bruises, cuts, and head trauma among those on board. Disturbing video footage shared online shows passengers being rescued through shattered windows of overturned train cars. Many of the carriages can be seen lying on their sides alongside the railbed.

In response to the emergency, Russian news agencies have stated that two additional trains and investigative teams have been dispatched to aid in the evacuation of passengers. The area where the derailment occurred is described as densely forested and swampy, complicating rescue efforts.
Authorities are currently assessing the safety standards of the affected railway line. Russian State Railways have confirmed the suspension of traffic on this route while investigations and necessary repairs are carried out. This incident highlights ongoing concerns about infrastructure safety and maintenance across Russia’s extensive railway network.
