Ukraine’s efforts to join NATO have hit a bump in the road. At NATO’s annual summit, Western leaders, especially from the United States, expressed concerns about Ukraine’s high levels of corruption. They believe Ukraine needs to address these issues before becoming a member of the military alliance, according to a report by the Daily Mail.
President Zelenskyy’s Hopes for Swift Accession
This development is a disappointment for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who had hoped for a quick accession to NATO following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
However, NATO will now ask Ukraine to take further steps to combat corruption before moving forward with formal membership discussions. A senior US State Department official told The Telegraph that while Ukraine has made significant reforms over the past two years, more needs to be done, particularly in fighting corruption.
“We have to step back and applaud everything that Ukraine has done in the name of reforms over the last two-plus years,” the official said. “We want to talk about additional steps that need to be taken, particularly in the area of anti-corruption. It is a priority for many of us around the table,” the official added.
President Zelenskyy’s Push for NATO Membership
President Zelenskyy, attending the summit in Washington, continued to advocate for NATO membership as a means to deter future Russian aggression. If Ukraine were a NATO member, NATO allies would be obligated to defend Ukraine in case of an attack.
However, Ukraine’s path to NATO membership remains uncertain. There are disagreements among NATO member states about whether to offer Ukraine a concrete timetable for accession. The US has adopted a cautious approach, proposing what they call a “well-lit bridge” towards eventual membership. This approach is dependent on Ukraine’s progress in fighting corruption and implementing necessary reforms.
Meanwhile, Ukraine continues to face significant challenges on the battlefield. Ukraine’s army has recently retreated from a neighborhood on the outskirts of Chasiv Yar, a strategically important town in the eastern Donetsk region.

In response to escalating Russian attacks on Ukrainian-held territories, NATO allies are expected to strengthen Ukraine’s defenses by providing additional air defense systems, including US Patriot missiles.

Despite the setback at NATO, Ukraine has made progress in securing bilateral security agreements with nearly 20 countries, according to The Telegraph. These agreements aim to bolster Ukraine’s security amidst the ongoing conflict with Russia.
