In a historic win, Keir Starmer, the leader of the Labour Party, is set to become the UK’s new Prime Minister. This victory ends 14 years of Conservative rule, with Starmer pledging a period of “national renewal.” The announcement was made at a Labour Party rally in central London on Friday morning, as reported by CNN.
Starmer addressed a jubilant crowd, celebrating the hard work and determination of his supporters. “You campaigned for it, you fought for it, you voted for it and now it has arrived. Change begins now,” he declared. He expressed his excitement, stating, “It feels good, I have to be honest. This is what it is for. A changed Labour party, ready to serve our country.”
Despite the celebration, Starmer highlighted the significant responsibility that comes with their mandate. Shortly after outgoing Prime Minister Rishi Sunak conceded defeat, Starmer emphasized the need for renewal and fairness. “Our task is nothing less than renewing the ideas that hold this country together. National renewal… If you work hard, if you play by the rules, this country should give you a fair chance to get on… We have to restore that,” he said.
Starmer stressed the importance of restoring trust in politics and returning it to public service. “We have to return politics to public service, show that politics can be a force for good. Make no mistake, that is the great test for politics in this era. The fight for trust is the battle that defines our age,” he added.
Starmer, who became an MP in 2015 and took over as Labour leader in 2020, has shifted the party towards the political centre. His platform focuses on revitalizing public services while maintaining fiscal responsibility, aiming for a balanced approach to governance.
On the other side, Rishi Sunak, who received 47.5 per cent of the vote in his constituency, conceded defeat and took responsibility for the Conservative Party’s loss. He acknowledged the efforts of his party members, saying, “I take responsibility for the loss to the many good, hard-working, conservative candidates who lost tonight despite their tireless efforts, their local records of delivery and their dedication to their communities, I am sorry.”
Sunak assured a smooth and respectful transition of power. “Today power will change hands in an orderly and peaceful manner, with goodwill on all sides,” he stated. The snap election, called unexpectedly by Sunak in late May, led to Labour’s decisive victory.
Reflecting on his time as Prime Minister, Sunak expressed his commitment to addressing the nation one last time. “I will now head down to London, where I will say more about tonight’s result before I leave the job of Prime Minister, to which I have given my all…” he said.
In a gesture of international goodwill, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Keir Starmer on his Labour Party’s historic victory. Modi also praised outgoing Prime Minister Rishi Sunak for his leadership, acknowledging his contributions to the UK.
The Labour Party’s victory marks a significant shift in the UK’s political landscape, with Starmer’s leadership promising a new direction focused on unity, fairness, and public service.
