Macron Rejects Prime Minister’s Resignation After Election Chaos
French President Emmanuel Macron has refused to accept the resignation of Prime Minister Gabriel Attal. On Monday, Macron asked Attal to remain temporarily as the head of the government after chaotic election results left the government in a state of uncertainty.
In the recent elections, French voters split their votes among the left, center, and right factions. This resulted in no group having enough seats to form a majority government. The outcome has created a risk of political paralysis in France, the European Union’s second-largest economy.
Macron had hoped that calling snap elections would provide clarity for France’s political direction. However, the results showed increased division instead. This situation arises just weeks before the Paris Olympics, adding pressure as the country prepares to be in the international spotlight.
Despite the political uncertainty, France’s main share index initially dipped but quickly recovered. This reaction suggests that markets were relieved there was no outright victory for any extreme political group.
Prime Minister Gabriel Attal, who had only been in office for seven months, offered his resignation on Monday morning. He had indicated he would stay in office if necessary. Macron immediately asked him to remain to ensure the country’s stability. Attal had previously expressed disagreement with Macron’s decision to call for snap elections.

The results of two rounds of voting have left no clear path for forming a government. Neither the leftist coalition, Macron’s centrist alliance, nor other factions have enough seats to create a stable government.
France now faces a period of political uncertainty with no clear majority in the legislature. President Macron and Prime Minister Attal must work through this challenging situation to maintain stability in the country.
