Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla will lead an Indian Parliamentary Delegation to the tenth BRICS Parliamentary Forum in St. Petersburg, Russia, scheduled for July 11 and 12, 2024. The delegation includes Harivansh, Deputy Chairman of Rajya Sabha, and other distinguished members from both houses of Parliament.
The forum’s overarching theme, ‘The Role of Parliaments in Strengthening Multilateralism for Equitable Global Development and Security,’ will guide discussions among Speakers and Members of Parliament from BRICS countries. Additionally, invitee countries and international organizations like the Inter-Parliamentary Union will also participate.
During the plenary sessions, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla will address key sub-themes including ‘The BRICS Parliamentary dimension’ and ‘Countering the fragmentation of the multilateral trade system amidst global crises.’ Similarly, the Deputy Chairman of Rajya Sabha, Harivansh, will contribute insights on ‘Enhancing the efficiency of international relations’ and ‘Inter-parliamentary cooperation in humanitarian and cultural spheres.’
A joint statement is expected to conclude the summit, reflecting shared priorities and commitments among participating nations. In addition to formal engagements, Speaker Om Birla plans to hold bilateral meetings with counterparts from other participating parliaments, fostering deeper ties and collaboration.
On the sidelines of the forum, Speaker Om Birla will also engage with the Indian Diaspora in Moscow, emphasizing cultural and community connections during his visit to Russia.
The participation of the Indian delegation underscores India’s commitment to parliamentary diplomacy and its role in advancing global cooperation for sustainable development and security.
