Italian police have taken action to rescue 33 Indian farm laborers from harsh working conditions in the northern Verona province. They also seized nearly half a million euros from their alleged exploiters. This case highlights concerns over labor exploitation in Italy, which has gained attention following a tragic accident earlier this year involving an Indian worker.
The alleged perpetrators, also of Indian origin, reportedly brought fellow nationals to Italy under seasonal work permits. Each worker was charged exorbitant fees of 17,000 euros with promises of a better future.
However, upon arrival, they were subjected to grueling conditions on farms, working seven days a week for 10-12 hours a day, earning just 4 euros per hour. This meager wage was docked until their debts were settled, a situation described by police as akin to slavery.
In a disturbing twist, some workers were coerced into working without pay to cover an additional 13,000 euros for a promised permanent work permit, which authorities say would never materialize. The alleged abusers now face charges related to slavery and labor exploitation.

Italy, like many European countries, faces labor shortages in sectors such as agriculture, often filled by immigrant workers. However, the migrant work visa system has been susceptible to fraud, exacerbating issues of exploitation. According to 2021 statistics, a significant portion of Italy’s workforce, particularly in agriculture, operates under illegal conditions, highlighting broader challenges with labor law enforcement.
Authorities have assured the rescued workers of protection, opportunities for legal employment, and residency papers to secure their rights in Italy. The case underscores ongoing efforts to combat labor abuses and ensure fair treatment for migrant workers contributing to the country’s economy.
