India and Bhutan have agreed to implement 61 new development projects during Bhutan’s 13th five-year plan. These projects, worth Rs. 4,958 crore, will be supported by India, which has pledged Rs. 10,000 crore in development aid to Bhutan.
The approved projects span several sectors, including connectivity, infrastructure, energy, health, education, capacity building, industrial parks, sports, digital economy, e-mobility, and space technology. The decision was made during the India-Bhutan Development Cooperation Talks held in Thimphu, co-chaired by India’s foreign secretary Vikram Misri, and Bhutan’s foreign secretary Pema Choden.
This visit to Bhutan marked Vikram Misri’s first foreign trip since he took office on July 15. His visit underscores the significance India places on its relationship with Bhutan. Earlier in March, India had doubled its financial support for Bhutan’s five-year plans.
The Bhutanese government expressed gratitude for India’s continuous support in their socio-economic development. The Development Cooperation Talks included detailed discussions on the assistance provided by India and how these development projects will be carried out. A joint statement issued after Misri’s visit highlighted these points.
During the talks, Bhutan presented its “Project Tied Assistance” proposals. Following this, both sides approved the 61 projects valued at Rs. 4,958 crore. Additionally, the two foreign secretaries virtually inaugurated 19 schools that were constructed during Bhutan’s 12th five-year plan.
The Bhutanese government shared its plans for the Economic Stimulus Programme (ESP) with India. Bhutan requested India to consider providing the full amount of Rs. 1,500 crore for the ESP within the first one-and-a-half years. India agreed to this request, provided there is progress in implementing the proposals.
The talks were described as friendly and cordial, reflecting the strong bonds of friendship and cooperation between India and Bhutan. Both sides agreed to hold the next round of Development Cooperation Talks in New Delhi.
During his visit, Vikram Misri also met with Bhutan’s King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay, and Foreign Minister DN Dhungyel. These meetings further emphasized the close ties between the two nations.
This latest round of development cooperation between India and Bhutan highlights the commitment of both countries to work together for mutual growth and prosperity. The projects approved will significantly contribute to Bhutan’s development and further strengthen the unique relationship between the two neighbors.
