Kimberly Cheatle, the head of the United States Secret Service, has resigned from her position. Her resignation came in the wake of a serious security incident involving former President Donald Trump. Cheatle’s decision follows an assassination attempt against Trump, which has led to heavy scrutiny and criticism of the agency’s performance.
Cheatle, who had been serving as Secret Service director since August 2022, faced intense questioning during a hearing before the House Oversight Committee. The committee criticized the Secret Service’s handling of the situation.
Cheatle acknowledged that the attempt on Trump’s life was the Secret Service’s “most significant operational failure” in decades. She took full responsibility for the security lapse in her resignation email.
The incident occurred on July 13, when a man named Thomas Matthew Crooks managed to get dangerously close to Trump during an outdoor campaign rally in Pennsylvania. Despite existing security measures and a prior threat to Trump from Iran, Crooks was able to get within 135 meters (157 yards) of the stage where Trump was speaking.
In her resignation email, Cheatle expressed her deep regret and said that stepping down was a difficult but necessary decision. The shooting incident has sparked several investigations and heightened calls for her resignation.
