President Joe Biden on Wednesday called on voters to defend democracy as he announced his decision not to seek re-election, instead endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris. In a solemn 10-minute Oval Office address, Biden emphasized the importance of democratic values over personal ambition.
“The defense of democracy is more important than any title,” Biden stated, avoiding direct mention of former President Donald Trump, whom he has previously labeled an existential threat to democracy. This address marked Biden’s first public statement since he announced his decision on Sunday, aiming to shape his legacy after one term in office.
“Nothing, nothing can come in the way of saving our democracy,” Biden said, reflecting on his 50-year public service career. He compared his decision to President Lyndon Johnson’s in 1968, underscoring his commitment to the country over personal goals. “I revere this office,” Biden added. “But I love my country more.”
Just an hour before Biden’s speech, Trump reiterated his baseless claims of voter fraud in the 2020 election during a campaign rally. Biden referred to the January 6 Capitol insurrection as “the worst attack on our democracy since the Civil War.”
Biden’s decision followed a poor debate performance against Trump, raising concerns about his fitness for office among Democrats and voters. Despite believing his record warranted another term, Biden faced mounting pressure to step aside.
“I have decided the best way forward is to pass the torch to a new generation,” Biden said, fulfilling his 2020 pledge to bridge to new leaders. He outlined his remaining priorities, including resolving the Israel-Hamas conflict, advancing cancer research, addressing climate change, and pushing for Supreme Court reform.
Biden’s legacy will heavily depend on Harris’s success in the election. He plans to support her campaign through events and fundraisers, though at a slower pace than if he were running. Harris’s performance will determine whether Biden’s decision to step aside will be seen as wise or premature.
Biden’s family joined him during the address, and hundreds of aides gathered to watch, showing their support. Outside, supporters held signs reading “We love Joe,” while a brass band played.
