On Friday, the Kremlin commented on remarks made by former President Donald Trump about Russia. Trump had described Russia as a powerful “war machine” and mentioned its historic victories over Napoleon and Hitler. He made these comments during a phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on July 19, and later discussed them with Fox News.
Trump’s statement highlighted Russia’s military strength and its past successes in major conflicts. He suggested that the ongoing war in Ukraine should be brought to an end, noting that Russia is experienced in warfare and has defeated significant adversaries in history.
The Kremlin’s spokesperson, Dmitry Peskov, responded to these remarks. Peskov acknowledged Russia’s historical military achievements, indicating that many Americans might not fully understand the depth of Russia’s history. He noted that the Kremlin appreciates Trump’s recognition of Russia’s past but also emphasized that they are realistic about the potential impact of his comments.
Peskov addressed concerns about Trump’s stance on Russia by referring to a recent Wall Street Journal article co-written by Mike Pompeo, a former Secretary of State under Trump. The article suggested that Trump might impose stricter sanctions on Russia and increase support for Ukraine if he were to be re-elected.

According to Peskov, the Kremlin is not overly optimistic about what a second Trump presidency could mean for Russia. He pointed out that during Trump’s first term, many sanctions were imposed on Russia. Despite Trump’s ability to maintain dialogue, Peskov suggested that his actions did not significantly differ from those of other US leaders when it came to Russia.
Overall, while the Kremlin appreciated Trump’s acknowledgment of Russia’s historical military prowess, it remains cautious and does not expect major changes in the US’s stance towards Russia under his potential future leadership.
