President Droupadi Murmu is set to begin a significant State visit to Fiji, New Zealand, and Timor-Leste from August 5 to August 10, 2024. This journey highlights India’s dedication to strengthening its relations with Pacific nations and emphasizes the country’s commitment to its Act East Policy.
The first stop on President Murmu’s trip is Fiji, where she will be from August 5 to 6. This visit is particularly noteworthy as it marks the first time an Indian Head of State has traveled to Fiji. During her stay, President Murmu will meet with Fiji’s President, Ratu Wiliame Maivalili Katonivere, and Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka. She will also address the Fijian Parliament, sharing insights about India’s global role and its relationship with Fiji.
Additionally, President Murmu will connect with the Indian diaspora residing in Fiji, underscoring India’s efforts to engage with its communities abroad and enhance bilateral ties.
Following Fiji, President Murmu will head to New Zealand from August 7 to 9. This part of the trip will involve meetings with New Zealand’s Governor General, Cindy Kiro, and Prime Minister Christopher Luxon.
During her visit, President Murmu is scheduled to address an education conference, reflecting India’s interest in educational collaboration and knowledge exchange with New Zealand. She will also engage with the Indian community in New Zealand, aiming to strengthen the cultural and social bonds between the two nations.
On August 10, President Murmu will arrive in Timor-Leste for her final destination. This visit will be a historic first as she will be the first Indian Head of State to travel to Timor-Leste. During her time there, she will meet with President Jose Ramos-Horta and have a meeting with Prime Minister Kay Rala “Xanana” Gusmao. The visit will also include interactions with the Indian community in Timor-Leste, further enhancing the relationship between the two countries.
President Murmu’s tour is an important move to bolster India’s relationships with these Pacific nations. It reflects India’s focus on the Act East Policy, which was introduced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the 9th East Asia Summit in 2014. This policy aims to deepen India’s ties with countries in the Asia-Pacific region and showcase India’s commitment to strengthening diplomatic and economic partnerships globally.
President Murmu’s visit underscores India’s proactive approach to international relations and its strategic focus on expanding influence and collaboration in the Pacific region.
