The Central government is all set to introduce the Waqf (Amendment) Bill in the Lok Sabha today to amend the law governing Waqf boards, proposing far-reaching changes in the present Act, such as ensuring the representation of Muslim women and non-Muslims in such bodies. While nearly 32 to 40 amendments are being considered in the Waqf Board Act, one such amendment includes restricting the powers of the Waqf Board. Significantly, ever since the reports regarding the amendments in the Waqf Act started to float, netizens started demanding that “The Waqf Act should not be amended, but abolished”, because the Waqf board has “misused their powers”, bringing over 9.4 lakh acres of land worth thousands of crores under its umbrella.
