Deputy National Security Advisor to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Pavan Kapoor, recently met with Andriy Yermak, the head of the office for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. During their discussion, they talked about how India could help restore peace in Ukraine as the war between Moscow and Kyiv continues.
Andriy Yermak expressed his hope that Prime Minister Modi will play a role in these peace efforts. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Yermak emphasized the need for a fair resolution to the conflict and encouraged India’s involvement. He also highlighted the severe conditions on the ground, including recent attacks on civilian areas.
One such attack occurred on Saturday when a Russian missile struck a supermarket in Kostyantynivka, a town in Ukraine’s Donetsk region, which is near the front lines. This strike resulted in the deaths of at least 14 people and injured 43 others, according to Ukrainian officials.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the attack, describing it as an act of terrorism aimed at ordinary civilians, and reported that there were people trapped under the rubble.
Responding to these developments, Andriy Yermak stressed the urgent need for a just peace in Ukraine and hoped that India, under Prime Minister Modi’s leadership, would contribute to this process. The Ukrainian Presidential Office released a statement underscoring the critical situation on the front lines and the impact of the recent attacks on civilian infrastructure.
India has recently participated in international discussions on this issue, including the Group of Seven (G7) Summit. During the summit, Prime Minister Modi and President Zelenskyy held a bilateral meeting where Modi reiterated India’s commitment to finding a peaceful solution to the ongoing conflict. Modi expressed deep sorrow over the loss of innocent lives and emphasized that peace cannot be achieved through fighting but only through dialogue and negotiation.
The discussions between India and Ukraine are part of broader international efforts to address the crisis and work towards a peaceful resolution.
