On Wednesday Sachin Sarjerao Khilari added a Paralympic silver to his world title in men’s shot put F46 event with an Asian record distance of 16.32 m at the ongoing Games. The 34-year-old Khilari achieved his best throw of the day in his second attempt to better his own earlier Asian record of 16.30 m which he set while winning gold in the World Para-Athletics Championships in Japan in May.

Greg Stewart of Canada defended his Tokyo Paralympic gold with a throw of 16.38 m. Luka Bakovic of Croatia took the bronze with 16.27 m. Khilari’s silver is the 11th medal from para-athletics in the ongoing Games. He had also won gold in last year’s Asian Para Games in China. Khilari’s silver is the 11th medal from para-athletics in the ongoing Games. He had also won gold in last year’s Asian Para Games in China.

Khilari’s father, Sarjerao Rangnath Khilari, is an agriculturist and a Maharashtra Krishi Bhushan awardee. He also has a degree in mechanical engineering after passing out of the Indira College of Engineering in Pune. Last year, he won his first world para title with a new Asian record throw of 16.21 m in Paris. He followed that up with anchor title at the Hangzhou Asian Para Games, throwing 16.03 m.

Sachin Sarjerao Khilari is a para-athlete from Kargani in Atpadi Taluka, Sangli district in India. Khilari’s childhood was derailed by a bicycle accident that resulted in a fracture. The injury took an extended period to heal, leading to the onset of gangrene and restricting the movement of his left hand. Khilari remained committed to his athletic aspirations. While studying mechanical engineering at the Indira College of Engineering in Pune, Khilari discovered a passion for javelin.

However, a shoulder injury during a competition forced him to switch to the shot put. Khilari continued to train relentlessly, honing his skills and overcoming physical limitations.
