On Thursday, Madhya Pradesh State Judo Academy’s boarding scheme player Kapil Parmar created history by winning a bronze medal in the Paralympics-2024 held from 28 August to 8 September in Paris, France. He defeated Brazil’s Elitton de Oliveira 10-0 in a one-sided 60 kg J-1 event late on Thursday evening and added the 25th medal to India’s kitty. For the first time Kapil represented the country in the Paralympics and has given India its first medal in Judo in Paralympic history.

State Sports and Youth Welfare Minister Vishwas Kailash Sarang appreciated Kapil and congratulated him. Kapil is mainly a resident of Sehore. He lost his eyesight due to electric shock in the year 2009-10. Kapil is 80 % blind and he started playing Judo under adverse circumstances. So far Kapil has represented India in 17 international competitions. He has won a total of 13 international medals including 8 gold medals so far.

In the Paralympic Games’ Blind Judo Men’s Individual 60 Kg J-1 event, a straight quarter final match was played instead of a qualifying match. This quarter-final match was played on Thursday between India’s Kapil Parmar and Venezuela’s Blanco MD. In this match, Kapil Parmar defeated Venezuela’s Blanco MD by 10-0 and entered the semi-final match. On Thursday, the semi-final match of Blind Judo Men’s Individual 60 Kg J-1 event was played between Academy’s Kapil Parmar and Iran’s player Syed Banitaba Khurram. Iran’s player Banitaba defeated Kapil by a margin of 1-0. Kapil’s match was played for bronze medal between Brazil’s player Eliton de Oliveira, in which Kapil won the match by 10-0 and won the bronze medal.

Meanwhile, Sachin Sarjerao Khilari added a Paralympic silver to his world title in men’s shot put F46 event with an Asian record distance of 16.32 m at the ongoing Games. The 34-year-old Khilari achieved his best throw of the day in his second attempt to better his own earlier Asian record of 16.30 m which he set while winning gold in the World Para-Athletics Championships in Japan in May.
