At least 40 people and 60 others have been wounded in an Israeli strike in the Gaza strip home to Palestinians displaced by the Israel-Hamas war said the authorities. ‘The United Nations has offered to monitor any cease-fire in Gaza and demanded an end to the worst death and destruction he has seen in his more than seven-year tenure’, said the U.N. chief.
The strike left behind significant damage, with large craters reported in the area. Civil defence spokesman Mahmoud Basal described the scene as devastating. He stated, ‘Entire families disappeared in the Mawasi Khan Yunis massacre, under the sand in deep holes’. Secretary-General António Guterres said in an interview that it’s very unrealistic to think the U.N. could play a major role in Gaza’s future, either by administering the territory or providing a peacekeeping force, because Israel is unlikely to accept a U.N. role.
The Israeli military released a statement saying the stroke targeted a Hamas command centre operating within the humanitarian zone in Khan Yunis. The Israeli Defense Forces accused Hamas of systematically abusing civilian and humanitarian infrastructure to carry out attacks against Israel.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his government have accused the UN of being anti-Israel and have been critical of UN humanitarian operations in Gaza, comprising accusing UN workers of collaborating with Hamas. He also has called for skepticism about peacekeeping missions, saying only Israel can protect itself.
