On Tuesday, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar presented the 25th Lal Bahadur Shastri National Excellence Award, 2024 to Rajshree Birla, Chairperson, Aditya Birla Community Initiatives and Rural Development Centre, at Vice President Enclave. In his address on the occasion, the Vice President said that Rajshree Birla has been serving humanity in various forms of education and healthcare for the last three decades. He said that on hearing the name of Lal Bahadur Shastri, one remembers patriotism.
Shastriji defines public service. He was a symbol of self-sacrifice. Shastriji set an example of conduct and behaviour, not sermons. There are some personalities who do not need any event management or systematic acting. They remain in our memories. They guide us, inspire us. When we were struggling with the crisis of starvation, the whole country stood with him.

He was the first person to encourage people’s participation by making a call. His call was not just a call, but arose from the then scenario, there was a threat of unimaginable dimensions. Imagine the scenario in which he would have taken charge. He was the only person who could have handled it!The Vice President said that we live in an age of event management where a person is honoured on the basis of parameters that are astonishing. People are elevated to a level in public places which is difficult to digest.
But in recent years, there has been a paradigm shift. For example, Padma Awards are being given to those who deserve it. That is why the credibility of this award has increased further. This award also falls in the same category. This moment will always remain in my memory, that I am honouring a giant of humanity, and this award is a badge of honour for one of the finest sons of the soil – whose memory will never fade away.
The very name of Lal Bahadur Shastri reminds of patriotism.
